Jim Acosta discovers old Trump boast that doesn’t fit so well with his latest tax excuses
CNN’s Jim Acosta made the tape about Donald Trump after the former president appeared to be fooling around with tax laws at a rally in Florida on Saturday following the indictment against his company and one of its top executives last week.
Acosta said on CNN Sunday that Trump mentioned some of the facts of the case, but did not actually question them. The Trump Organization and its chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg were charged Thursday with multiple financial crimes by the Manhattan district attorney for an alleged tax fraud scheme. Both parties have pleaded not guilty.
“They go after good, hard-working people for not paying taxes on a company car. You didn’t pay tax on the car! Or a company apartment! He used an apartment because he needs an apartment because he has to travel too far where his home is, he didn’t pay taxes or education for his grandchildren, ‘”Trump said at the campaign-style rally in Sarasota.
“I don’t even know. You have to do it, does anyone know the answer to those things? Ok? But they accuse people for that. “
Acosta agreed that the tax code can be confusing. But not for Trump, apparently, based on his many past boasts.
The CNN host reproduced a clip from May 13, 2016, in which Trump said, “I think no one knows more about taxes than I do, perhaps in the history of the world.”
“I understand tax laws better than almost anyone, that’s why I’m the one who can really fix them,” also said in october of the same year, boasting that he used those laws “brilliantly” to pay the least amount of taxes legally possible.
