England star Mings criticizes Patel for ‘stoking the fire’ of racism

England defender Tyrone Mings attacked Home Secretary Priti Patel for the storm of racism that followed England’s defeat to Italy in the final of Euro 2020.

Mings accused Patel of pretending to be disgusted by the abuse of England players, having ruled out taking the knee as a “gesture policy” before the tournament.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka received racist abuse on social media after missing penalties in the penalty shootout with Italy after the match ended 1-1.

A Rashford mural in Manchester was defaced, but has subsequently been covered with messages of goodwill.

Patel was one of the politicians who condemned the abuse of England players and tweeted: “I dislike that England Players who have given so much for our country this summer have been subjected to vile racist abuse on social media.

“There is no place in our country and I support the police to hold those responsible to account.”

Mings, who played twice during the tournament, quoted his tweet as saying: “You can’t fan the fire at the start of the tournament by labeling our anti-racism message ‘Gesture Policy’ and then pretending to be upset when exactly what we’re campaigning for happens. “

In June, Patel defended the right of English fans to boo when players knelt before kick-off.

She told GB News: “I just don’t support people who engage in that kind of gesture, the politics of gestures, to some extent, too.”

Labor vice leader Angela Rayner said Patel had put gasoline on the fire.

She tweeted: “Let me be clear. The Prime Minister and Home Secretary licensed racists who booed England players and are now racially abusing England players.

“Boris Johnson and Priti Patel are like arsonists who complain about a fire that got gasoline. Total hypocrites. “

The prime minister said that those who abuse England players “should be ashamed of themselves.”
