Von der Leyen insists on the ban on elevator travel to Europeans for Europeans – POLITICO

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called on the US to lift the travel ban for EU citizens in an interview with the German media RND published Wednesday.

“The epidemiological situation in the United States and the EU today is very similar. We need to solve the problem as soon as possible and we are in contact with our American friends. This should not go on for weeks,” von der Leyen told RND.

Von der Leyen’s comments come as the entry ban for European travelers to the US persists, even as the EU has lifted entry restrictions for US citizens in June.

In mid-June, the EU added the US to its “green list”, allowing entry even to unvaccinated travelers. Later in June, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US government hoped to lift the ban as soon as possible, but declined to specify when.

An EU official last week called the travel ban a “huge disappointment”, even if Brussels had refrained from making a fuss until now. Officials said at this time they saw little benefit in creating tension with Americans as Europe faces an unpredictable new wave of coronavirus infections.
