Working on Roblox: Meet Andrea Fletcher
Andrea is a software engineer focused on bringing people together and fostering communication on Roblox. He has worked on various teams during his tenure at Roblox and is currently working in the Groups feature from within the Social team.
Describe the role of your team here at Roblox.
We work on features that bring people together and encourage communication, such as Chat, Friends, and Groups. We enable users to find the people and communities that matter to them, work to deepen those connections, and help developers integrate these communities and people into their experiences.
What is one of the most interesting aspects of working on your team on Roblox?
Despite being hired as a full-stack web developer and doing mostly web interface work, the scope of things that I have worked on has been very wide: I have fixed Android bugs, ran migrators, and made changes to the database. data. There is always the opportunity to learn other disciplines and acquire new skills, and my colleagues are very open to helping on and off their teams.
Second, the main feature I work on, groups, has many different purposes. You can have a group to organize a development team, grow a community, or act as a faction in a role-playing experience. When implementing new features, we must ensure that we are considering all use cases, ensuring that users have frictionless interactions with Roblox, regardless of how they access the platform. This means that when we create a new feature, we make sure that it can be leveraged on any device or browser. It’s fun and challenging to put myself in the different shoes of our users and take time to understand their needs and behaviors.
How is your experience on the Roblox team different from other roles you’ve had?
As an engineer, my contribution to roadmap planning is valued and heard. Our team has excellent relationships between engineering, product and design. Everyone is encouraged to work together on the performances rather than making their parts separately and turning them in. This collaborative culture has helped me grow as more than just an engineer.
What do you love about culture on Roblox?
Roblox is great because we really care about our community. We have an extremely active developer forum and many employees are experienced as community members. I enjoy working on a product that has such a passionate and ambitious group of people using it, and I’m excited to go to work every day.
I also love the culture of our company. We do things, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Every Halloween we have a costume contest for the whole company with prizes for the different categories. It’s so much fun watching people opt for Most Robloxian by dressing up as their Roblox characters or popular avatar packs, or watching an entire team in matching rompers or dressing up as their favorite TV characters.
